Simon Asbury Dixon - Private |
(3x-Great Uncle) Simon Asbury Dixon (along with his brother, William Anderson Dixon) enlisted at Cherokee County, NC on January 5th, 1863. Served in Company B, Walkers Battalion of Thomas Legion. He and his brother spent 10 rather uneventful months guarding the railway bridges of the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad, experiencing only minor skirmishes until the Federal artillery bombarded Confederate defenders at Carter’s Depot on September 21 and 22. Flanked out of their entrenchments, the Confederates retreated to Zollicoffer, burning the bridge over the Watauga River at Carter’s Depot as they left. Apparently, that was enough of that war for my two uncles, in October 1863 they are listed as deserting at Carters Depot. Simon and William returned and lived the remainder of their lives near the town of Cleveland, Bradley County, TN.

George Washington Henry is my great (x4) grandfather. He was born Apr 1, 1828 and died Sept 5, 1864. Son of Vinet Henry and Roseanna Lower Henry.
It is unclear whether he was killed in action, died of disease, or died of other causes. He is buried in his home state of Tennessee. George was 36 when he died.
It has been rumored in my family that he was killed by Union soldiers dragging him behind a horse.
